Gallery OUT of PLACEでは、 2023年11 - 12月期の展覧会として、上須元徳による個展「monochrome painting」（平面絵画）を開催します。
近年はデフォルメされた自動車や家をカラフルに描くシリーズが話題になることの多い上須ですが、
今回Gallery OUT of PLACEでは、彼が20年間以上描き続けているもう一つのシリーズ、グリッドで覆われた建造物を描いたモノクロームの作品群を発表します。
白黒の銀塩写真を顕微鏡で拡大して見たときの銀の粒子のように、隣り合うグリッドに微妙な濃淡をつけながら、一つ一つレンガを積み上げていくように精緻に描かれています。
あたかも写真のような硬質で冷たい光沢感が無機質に表現されているのと同時に、爬虫類の有機的な肌理がもつエロティシズムをも湛えており、これが手作業でなされたものなのかと疑うほどに観る者の視覚と触覚を強く刺激する作品です。
私のモノクロームペインティングの制作は、一つ一つの小さなパーツを慎重に塗り分け、
少しずつトーンを変え、積み重ねていく作業です。
その際に使った、マスキングテープの痕跡がわずかに画面にグリッド状に残ります。
そのわずかなグリッドが私のペインティングの痕跡であり、その程度でよいと考えています。
絵が一枚完成すればまた次の一枚へと向かいます。
そしてその絵は、前回の絵と見分けがつかないくらいの同じような絵になることもあります。
そんなことは気にせずに、私はまた次の一枚へと向かいます。
私の制作は日々その繰り返しです。

Gallery OUT of PLACE is pleased to announce the following exhibition for November - December 2023,
Motonori Uwasu's solo exhibition 'monochrome painting' (two-dimensional paintings) will be held.
In recent years, Uwasu has often been the focus of attention for his series of colourful paintings of deformed cars and houses,
This time, Gallery OUT of PLACE presents another series he has been painting for more than 20 years: a series of monochrome works depicting buildings covered with grids.
Like the silver particles in a black-and-white silver-halide photograph magnified under a microscope, the works are painted with precision, with subtle shading on the neighbouring grids, like bricks being piled up one by one.
The work is inorganically expressed as if it were a photograph with a hard, cold sheen, but at the same time it is filled with the eroticism of the organic texture of reptiles, and strongly stimulates the viewer's sense of sight and touch to the extent that one wonders whether the work has been done by hand.
Artist comment
The production of my monochrome paintings is a process of carefully painting each small part,
gradually changing the tone and building up.
The traces of masking tape used in this process leave a slight grid on the screen.
That slight grid is a trace of my painting, and I consider that to be enough.
When one painting is completed, I go on to the next one.
And sometimes that painting will be so similar to the previous one that it will be indistinguishable from the previous one.
I don't worry about that and go on to the next one.
My work is a daily repetition.
